Let's Paint!

I don't know about you, but I've really enjoyed the spring weather the past few days! I get to have the craft room windows and door open and listen to the birds. I wanted to work in the yard but knew there wasn't time for that so anything I could take outdoors with me and work on was the way to go. This is the time of year when my office/craft room being an enclosed porch is a bonus!

Addie and I took advantage of the warm weather the other day and did a little painting outside on our deck. We created what's called a Hot Mess Canvas. These are so simple and fun and the end results are really neat. The key here is be creative!

To make these you will need a canvas or something of your choosing to paint. As you can see in the photos I used a canvas but Addie was painting a wooden egg. You will need acrylic paint in various colors as well as white to finish your painting. We used big sponge brushes to create our textures. You will also need a stencil of some sort. I cut ours out with my Cricut so if you have one you can do the same or you can purchase an already made stencil from the craft store.

Ok, let's get painting! First step is to create your base layer. This is the colorful and exciting layer. We chose to place droplets of paint all over our canvases and then take a large sponge brush and blend them all together.

Once you've completed this step you need to let the painting dry. While ours was drying we worked on our stencils. Addie chose an Easter quote for her egg. The hardest part about this whole process (in my opinion) is weeding the stencil!

Once the first layer of paint has dried you can apply your stencil to your canvas. We used transfer tape to put ours on.

Once your stencil is in place and where you want it you will paint over the ENTIRE canvas with white paint. Yes, you read that correctly. You are going to paint over everything you just did!

It took a few layers of white for the canvas and Addie probably should have done at least a second layer on her egg. It was getting close to dinner time so she left it with the one layer. The last part of the process is to remove your stencil. We chose to do this while the paint was still wet. You can use a toothpick to carefully take it off.

That's it! That is a Hot Mess Canvas! We really enjoyed making them. Like I mentioned previously, the stencil was the hardest part of the process. I still haven't finished my second canvas because I haven't finished weeding my stencil😂 If you make your own, please share on our Facebook page, we'd love to see what you create!
